Welcome to New York

After a few days in Boston, we were able to run to New York City for a few days - a place that none of the kids have ever been.  It was a crazy few days, but we had so much fun!!!

Julia and Noah took a drawing lesson at the Disney store in Time Square to learn to draw Pascal.

While in NYC, Noah turned 10.  We can't believe that we've crossed the threshold into double digits!

We stopped at a fun gelato place that places their gelato on the cone in the shape of a rose and will even put a macaroon in the center.

When you can't have dairy desserts, finding super fancy rice krispy treats in the spirit of cotton candy and s'more is a big win.

The littles are excited for dessert

We got to visit the Statue of Liberty and do an audio tour.  Here, Anna is either contemplating liberty or watching a seagull.

Julia on the other hand, Julia was just trying to balance the audio guide on the side of her head.

The NYC skyline

Lady Liberty

Although we joke that Simon's heritage came over to the US via British Airway, most of my ancestors came through Ellis Island and would have passed through this very hall.  These people a product of those journeys so very long ago.

What trip to NYC is complete without foam Lady Liberty crowns?

One of Jonah's friend from school, Claire, was in NYC at the same time - staying just around the corner so we had to make sure to meet up for a short visit.

Julia took up the open space at Ellis Island to do some interpretive dance moves

We were able to take the kids to Wicked and Aladdin as their Broadway introduction.  All of the kids loved all of the shows and we were so glad to introduce them to this type of cultural experience.

Love That Dirty Water

Once Boston is in your blood, it's always home, even if you don't live there.  At least that's how it is for us.  After years of being away, we were finally able to visit Boston as a family and it as wonderful as we remembered and a perfect breath of air for our souls.

We took a Boston Duck Tour - the original Duck Tour and it was a lot of fun.  The most enjoyable part for all of us was when the kids took over steering the Duck (Frog Pond Lilly) while in the Charles River.

This was Jonah's highlight of all of Boston

Anna was getting ready to practice for her boat license

Noah got to drive us under the Longfellow Bridge (aka the salt & pepper bridge), and he managed to not crash, which we were all happy about.

Make way for ducklings

We got to visit with my old co-workers and friends - Audrey & Bonnie and bits of their families.  The kids loved everyone, but were most taken with the Bergan's dog, Checkers.

My old college friend and roommate, Jamie, was able to meet up with us and tour all our old haunts on the North Shore, including Cherry Farm Creamery which was the ice cream of our teens & 20s and beyond.

The Lewises hosted a BBQ for some of our Park Street friends.  Someone once said that you can't make old friends, you can only keep them.  These people, this gathering, this place - so much love and history captured in one place.

When old friends become new again.  It was so fun to see the girls running around together as if no time had ever passed.

Dave and Lanna Lewis.  They raised a great son, Jeff and all of them have been dear to our family supporting and loving us through the years.  We were so honored that they stopped by the BBQ to visit for a little.

Tiny Dancer

After years of missed recitals, we were able to manage our summer vacations to allow Julia to perform in her very first dance recital.  She was a little nervous before, but ended up loving the chance to be up on stage.  I expect many more Julia performances in our future!

Montana Sky

My grandmother was nothing is not particular and clear about her wishes.  She had told my brother and I countless times, that if she were to pass away in the winter we had to "hold onto her" until the spring, as she didn't want to have to pay extra to have the cemetery dig up frozen ground.  She was a spirited and funny lady.

To honor her wishes, despite her passing in February, we waited to intern her remains until now.  Most of the family was able to attend the services and it was a nice time to be together with family in a place that was so special in my childhood.

My mom and her brothers, Larry and Moe (yes, my mom was referred to as Curly growing up, and Moe's real name is Anthony).

This is the legacy of my grandparents - 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. (2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren were not able to attend and are not included).  We are by no means a perfect crowd, but I hope that we are crowd that my grandparents can be proud of.

This is the house that my grandfather built with his own hands.  I spent many a summer playing in this yard, eating raspberries off the vine in a garden that is no more and enjoying the simple pleasures of childhood summers.

The water tower was always the best marker for me - standing tall in town.  It's strange to think that it's been over 10 years since I've seen it last and will likely be at least 10 more before I see it again.

Just a little Montana beauty for you on the roadside of the Bison Range.

Every time we came to Montana growing up, we'd go to the Bison Range.  I was so glad to be able to take my own kids this time so they could experience a bit of my childhood.  It certainly helped that we saw lots and lots of bison, deer and even an elk.

Pleasant View Cemetery is where my grandparents rest.  The big sky of Montana covering them.

After a life well lived, this is where grandma wanted to be - home with her Savior and reunited with her husband, the love of her life.

Mom and Scott, chilling on a bench while the rest of us practiced our stone skipping at Flathead Lake.  Flathead is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.  We had some pretty successful stone skipping attempts, but I think that Scott won with a stone that skipped 8 times!

Julia was brave enough to put her feet (and later her jean covered bottom) into glacier-feed waters.  It certainly was chilly, but the sun, high in the sky, made it all worth it.  It is my hope that my children are able to hold onto these memories of Montana, and think fondly of this area that holds a special place in my heart.

In true Goodall style, no vacation is complete without an unplanned visit to the hospital.  Right at the end of our trip, Noah ended up with a seriously infected parotid gland (salivary gland) that made half his face swell up and caused him a lot of pain.  Luckily with a lot of antibiotic, he's on the mend.  Some people collect plates, spoons or magnets on vacation - we apparently collect Goodall medical charts at different hospitals.  Here's to this being the worst medical malady our family experiences this summer!
